Site-specific installation for a platform at Svenshögen, Sweden
Two existing lamp posts on the platform - one with a station clock and the other with a drawn dial on the asphalt using industrial wax crayon.
As part of an exhibition residency at Stationen in Svenshögen, I created a sundial using a lamppost on the platform. Inspired by the period before the 1878 time reform in Sweden – when stations had one clock for local solar time and another for railway time – I let the lamppost function as the sundial’s gnomon, in dialogue with another lamppost bearing a clock.
Due to weather conditions, the sundial was made over the course of three days. Each hour when the sun was out, I marked the midpoint of the lamppost’s shadow with chalk, then made a rectangle with a black wax-based crayon and stencils mimicking the appearance of the dial on the station’s clocks. The sundial has a mark for each solar hour that cast a shadow on the platform during my residency week (week 42).
Displayed on two windows of the station house was a letter to commuters and passersby reflecting on the history of timekeeping and the human relationship with the sun, accompanied by a short text describing what was happening on the platform. The letter referenced a letter written by Félix González-Torres to his partner Ross, which includes a drawing of González-Torres’s work Untitled (Perfect Lovers).
